We have a few ancient inns two of which are the oldest survivors in their respective towns. Of these the Duke of York is particularly special being the oldest inn in Lichfield, itself a medieval town with a great history. The Duke sits at the top of the town, on Greenhill, many years ago this was ‘the’ trading area but this is now further down the hill, some call the Duke ‘the top shop’ as a consequence. It is bang opposite the new giant Tesco but this doesn’t in anyway detract from its enormous charm, it’s just jolly convenient instead.

The oldest pub doesn’t disappoint, the ancient oak beams span the old bar and seem to defy gravity as they have settled over the pub’s 400 year story. The front bar is pretty much unchanged in that time, a big inglenook, oak benches, wide oak timber floor and of course a lovely real fire. There is also a lower bar which was once the cottage next door, but is now home to the dart board and more cosy places to sit.

The rear bar used to be the coaching stables and has been known as the back room for years. It was the extra smart room, totally separate and the beer used to be two pence more. Now the beer prices are the same but it’s still a shade quieter than the old bar and also has its own real fire.

Paul and Wendy will be pleased to welcome you; they are hosts of the highest order. They only opened in December ‘09 but will be specialising in the best ever sandwiches, as well homemade soup, ploughman’s and pork pie platters all day, with bowls of chips at lunchtime and early evening, soon into 2010. They will also be able to cater for small functions during the week where the back room is available if required.

The Duke also has its own bowling green and an active club. If you’re interested in playing let us know.

Easy parking at the rear and plenty of outdoor benches for drinking, eating, smoking.
