The Lower Chequer, Sandbach

Visit the oldest building in Sandbach

Our Brewery Tap is tucked down Crown Bank in the quaint town of Sandbach, a thriving market town most well-known for its ancient Saxon Crosses on market square which is a stone throw away from our Tap. Sandbach is also known for the 12 times National Brass Band Championship winners ‘Foden’s Band’.

The Lower Chequer has undergone a sympathetic restoration, bringing back the original charm of the pub – the oldest building in Sandbach. The immense history of the pub dating back as far as 1570 guided the restoration. It is said that the ‘chequered board’ was used to help educate customers to count their money, and the old landlords of the pub were the money lenders to the locals. An ancient horseshoe is nailed to the bar, a luck link that spans 400 years, and the pub was one of Cheshire’s best known coaching inns on the main route from Manchester to London.

The Chequer was first called the Church Inn after worshipers and clerks from the Parish Church, just 50 yards from the inn, used to quench their thirst after service. The Chequer is known to have a ghost called ‘You’, a stable hand who died in his forties and his presence has been felt in the cellar. You can find a smart walled beer garden to the rear of the pub, and easy parking just in front of the Church on Crown Bank.

Sandbach is easily accessible and has easy links with the local train station and is just a few minutes away from the M6.

Always on Tap, Joule’s Pale Ale, Slumbering Monk, Pure Blonde and our English craft lager Green Monkey, alongside our rotating seasonal ale and cold craft beer. All brewed in Market Drayton with pure Shropshire mineral water.

Don’t miss, the array of speciality food evenings across the year but don’t forget to book to avoid disappointment.
