A quintessential ale house full of warmth, character, and traditional charm.
In the Shropshire market town of Shrewsbury, aptly named the ‘Heart of Shropshire’ the Dolphin is one of our 4 Shrewsbury Taphouses. The Dolphin originates from 1820 and stands alongside what used to be the Whitchurch Turnpike, an industrial district bordering Coton Hill, famous for its stone.
The name ‘The Dolphin’ may simply refer to the sea creature, odd though, given it’s nowhere near the sea, or more likely it could have been a Victorian typo transcribed from the French word for dauphin. As fable has it the eldest son of a French king, was reported to have visited Shrewsbury in the mid-14th century searching for the renowned stone found on Coton Hill, which was desired to form part of the newly commissioned royal Chateau in Rouen.
The Dolphin is a quintessential ale house, with cosy corners, oak floor boards, not one but two log burners and is proudly dog friendly throughout. To the rear of the pub there is a raised beer deck which catches the mid-afternoon sun.
Always on Tap, Joule’s Pale Ale, Slumbering Monk, Pure Blonde and our English craft lager Green Monkey, alongside our rotating seasonal ale and cold craft beer. All brewed in Market Drayton with pure Shropshire mineral water.
Easy street parking just a skip away on St Michaels Street.
The Dolphin hosts a traditional pub quiz, acoustic nights and open mic nights.
