The Shakespeare Inn Wins National Pub Design Award

Joule’s Brewery’s Bridgnorth Taphouse has won the Joe Goodwin CAMRA Pub Design Award for Best Street Corner Local held in conjunction with Historic England. Named after the late CAMRA chair this award recognises the highest standards of architecture in the refurbishment and conservation for outstanding street corner locals.

The Shakespeare Inn reopened as a Joule’s Brewery Tap in February 2018 after a sympathetic restoration by Joule’s Brewery’s team of master craftsmen.

Proudly sitting on the corner of West Castle Street in Bridgnorth’s High Town the welcoming glow from the log burners beckons you in to this quintessential English Pub. Bespoke stained glass windows and mirrors glitter around the pub and are depicted with their signature bee trade mark, signifying the pub as the honey pot of the community. Around every corner you will find the perfect place to settle with a pint of Joule’s or enjoy a Sunday Lunch with your two and four legged friends.

A key part of the Taphouse’s restoration in 2018 was the addition of the Boathouse as a nod to Bridgnorths oldest society, the Rowing Club. The reclaimed oak paneling is accented with new slip bricks and traditional Joule’s enamel signs, creating the perfect place for community events, private functions, and bank holiday festivities.

Andrew Davison, chair of CAMRA’s Pub Design Award judging panel, said: “In these uncertain and worrying times for pubs, we are delighted to be celebrating the stunning, eclectic range of architecture and design preserved in these institutions.

“Some of these pubs have been used in that capacity for hundreds of years, demonstrating not only their tenacity and endurance, but also the necessity of the pub to the British way of life. We hope that all will be able to endure the current crisis, and that patrons will be able to celebrate their achievement in person once the restrictions have lifted.

“We had a tough time narrowing it down to these six exemplary pubs — congratulations to them all!”

Vicky Colclough, Brand Director for Joule’s Brewery adds ‘The Shakespeare is a special pub for us, the design was centred around re-creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere, focusing the Pub around the bar which after all is the heart of the pub. Then our aim was to create cosy corners for people to be able to settle and while away the day.’
