No one knows whether the Lord Hill is named after Sir Rowland Hill who founded Market Drayton’s first school in 1555 or Sir Rowland Hill of Hawkstone Park Commander at the Battle of Waterloo, and whose statue sits outside the county’s Shire Hall. This is not the subject of any controversy and is rarely discussed in the Lord Hill.
It is however a fact that the pub was one of a handful built by Joule’s; in this case the brewery expanded its plot by buying adjacent land and built the Lord Hill behind the old one and then knocked down the smaller version. Building started in 1932 and completed in 1934 and the pub was built with tremendous care, using cut stone and wonderful oak panelling. The fire place was designed and built by Joule’s at the same time as the one at the very popular Fox Inn at nearby Chetwynd Aston, nr Newport, a pub also built by Joule’s and at the same time. The other flagship pubs built by Joule’s at the time include the Corbett in Market Drayton, the Raven at Prees and of course the lounge at the Red Lion, now the Brewery site.
The company’s trade mark cross is still visible above the Lord Hill swing sign – it is absolutely fitting that in our home town we have re claimed the Lord Hill.
Roy and Sharon run the Lord Hill, Roy has lived round the corner all his life and remembers the pub being at the heart of the community as a boy. He takes great care of this pub, and runs it similarly now as then. The pub’s teams always fare well, Friday night entertainment rarely fails to entertain and Thursday night bingo is becoming an institution, well worth visiting for but never taken too seriously. Roy is normally behind all the activity and Sharon is always totally immersed.
Plenty of parking, stacks of space for outdoor drinking and smoking and just a short hop from the brewery.
